A last wish comes true in Zandvoort

The Social Impact program of the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix has many initiatives, but the collaboration with F1® and Stichting Ambulance Wens stands out as one that has created heartwarming moments for terminally ill patients ever since the Dutch Grand Prix returned.

This year, once again, Stichting Ambulance Wens and the Dutch Grand Prix joined forces to help make the dreams of several terminally ill patients come true. Their visit to the Dutch Grand Prix was made even more special with a unique Pitlane Walk on Thursday.

A Behind-the-Scenes Experience

A 24-year-old patient from Ireland was even flown in this year. Attending the Dutch Grand Prix had long been one of her greatest wishes. Patients, many of whom are typically confined to their beds, were given a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of Formula 1. Guided through the F1 Paddock, they were brought to the pitlane, where teams treated them to exclusive insights into the sport.

One team passed around an official F1 steering wheel for the visitors to hold, while another showcased the ultra-light carbon fiber that plays such a vital role in the design of F1® race cars. Afterwards, the patients and their accompanying family members attended the rehearsal of the national anthem and the pre-race show on the grid.

An Unforgettable Day

During the race weekend itself, the Dutch Grand Prix also welcomed other patients, giving them an unforgettable day in Zandvoort.
“The way we are able to make this happen together for people who are passionate about motorsport, and give them a few joyful moments with their loved ones, brings us a great sense of fulfillment every year,” said Dimitri Bonthuis, Sustainability Manager at the Dutch Grand Prix.
