Sustainability
At the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix
The FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN DUTCH GRAND PRIX demonstrates that a major sporting event can be so much more than just racing. By investing in sustainability, inclusivity, talent development, and nature conservation, the event creates a lasting positive impact. For visitors, the local community, and society at large. In this way, Zandvoort serves not only as the backdrop for thrilling races, but also for a future-proof and socially responsible spectacle that everyone can enjoy.
F1 PROMOTER AWARDS 2023
At the F1 Promoter Awards 2023, organized by Formula One Management, the Dutch Grand Prix took home two awards. In addition to the title of Promoter of the Year, the event also received the award for Innovative ESG Activation of the Year. This award recognizes the significant strides the organization has made in the area of sustainability. For instance, CO₂ emissions have been reduced by 94.5% since 2021, and 98% of visitors traveled sustainably in 2023. The award underscores that sustainability is an integral part of the event.
SMART TRAVEL AND GREEN ENERGY
Although some 300,000 fans travel to Zandvoort during the race weekend, as an organization we want virtually all visitors to travel in an environmentally friendly way—for example, by bike, train, or bus. In 2025, less than 1% of visitors used non-sustainable transportation options. Additionally, only electric buses or buses running on HVO100 fuel are used. This makes mobility one of the most important pillars in making the event more sustainable.
Green electricity is the standard on and around the circuit. Thanks to fixed connection points and the partnership with Aggreko, the entire Paddock runs on sustainable energy. The latest generators use HVO100 fuel, and within the public areas, fixed power supplies ensure an energy-efficient approach.
AN EVENT FOR EVERYONE
As a major event, we believe it is important for the Dutch Grand Prix to be accessible to as many people as possible and to make a positive contribution to society. That is why we collaborate annually with various initiatives that support these goals:
Through the Discover Your Drive program, in collaboration with F1 ACADEMY™, young women are given the opportunity to explore the behind-the-scenes world of motorsport (from technology to organization) and are inspired to explore their own career opportunities within this sector.
Accessibility plays a key role in this. In partnership with HandicapNL, we are committed to making the event as accessible as possible for people with disabilities. Among other things, we offer the Dutch GP Radio: an online station with special commentary for visually impaired fans, wheelchair rentals, and transportation around the circuit via special buggies.
SOCIAL IMPACT
The long-standing partnership with HandicapNL was honored in 2025 with the F1 Allwyn Global Community Award. This recognition celebrates our joint commitment to increasing inclusivity within the sport.
Together with the Ambulance Wish Foundation, we fulfill the wishes of terminally ill patients every year, allowing them to experience the event up close. In addition, the Dutch Grand Prix collaborates with the LINDA.foundation, providing families with limited financial means access to the event.
Specifically to give back to the municipality of Zandvoort, students from a local elementary school were also invited last year to get acquainted with the event and the drivers in the Paddock.
Finally, we also consider what remains after the event. Surplus, edible food is donated to the food bank, ensuring it is put to good use and preventing waste.
CARE FOR NATURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Zandvoort Circuit is situated in the heart of a unique dune landscape, a nature reserve that we actively protect. Through our Nature Preservation Program, we ensure that the area will be just as well-maintained after the 2026 event as it was in 2020. This is a responsibility we have taken seriously since the race returned to the Netherlands. During the event, all waste is sorted and recycled, and we use sustainable cups. In and around the dunes, special cleanup teams ensure that the area remains clean and free of litter.
INVESTING IN PEOPLE AND TALENT
For the Dutch Grand Prix, economic sustainability is not just about numbers, but above all about people. Behind the scenes, more than 1,400 volunteers contribute to the event’s success each year. Their dedication and enthusiasm are indispensable. In fact, the number of people interested in volunteering exceeds the number of available spots every year.
In addition, we invest annually in talent development through training programs and learning pathways. We also offer people who are distanced from the labor market the opportunity to gain experience within the volunteer team. Through these initiatives, the event actively contributes to the development of new talent and the future of the events industry.
